Dr. Donovan Martin

Professional

I am so excited to be teaching 7th grade ELA at Terramar this year! I recently changed careers after more than 10 years in higher education. My wonderful spouse was fortunate to land her dream job here in Arizona and I decided to pursue my love of teaching in a public school setting. I love working with middle schoolers during this amazing time in their educational journey.

I earned a PhD in Philosophy and Literature from Purdue University. Before landing at Terramar, I wrote extensively for both academic and popular audiences as an art critic, novelist, short story writer, and essayist focused on local history and personal narrative. I hope to connect kids to the power of words and enrich their classroom with real-world insight into the importance of reading and writing for their future success. My writing has won several awards, including multiple Editor's Choice and Reader's Choice Awards for my personal essays about growing up in Appalachia. I am currently completing the Graduate Teaching Certification Program with Arizona State University.

Personal

I grew up in a small town in Western Maryland, close to both Pennsylvania and West Virginia, where much of my family still live. I fell in love with books and reading from an early age and pursued school to the highest level I could. All forms of art and writing are amazing to me. I am an avid comic book collector and have been collecting X-Men comics since I was 7 or 8 years old.

Coming from Appalachia, I enjoy the outdoors, hiking, and camping, especially in the mountains and near water. I have an amazing 4-year-old son and two ornery cats. The family enjoys taking roadtrips together, and our goal is to visit all of the national parks!
