WALK-UP TO MATH

  • In Deer Valley’s Walk-Up to Math model, students "walk-up" (as a group or cluster) to the next grade level's gifted cluster math class. The school's Gifted Specialist works with the Gifted Cluster Teacher to help instruct students in the classroom and pull out small groups of students as needed.

Students in grades 3-5 are automatically placed into a Walk-Up to Math classroom when they score at the 97th percentile (or higher) on the Quantitative Battery of a state-approved gifted assessment.  Students in grades 6-8 are placed into a Walk-Up to Math classroom when they score at the 97th percentile (or higher) on the Quantitiative Battery of a state-approved gifted assessment and achieve a passing score on the Middle School Math Placement Assessment.  Students who score between the 94th - 96th percentile on the Quantitative Battery of a state-approved gifted assessment may be considered for placement into a Walk-Up to Math classroom.  In these situations, a portfolio of student data is required to support placement - including a passing score on the Middle School Math Placement Assessment.

In schools where in-person instruction is not available, students may participate in an online learning course.  ASPIRE – Deer Valley’s Online Learning Program also provides middle level and high school courses to elementary and middle school students.

Is Walk-Up Math the BEST Fit for My Chid?

Students who tend to be the most successful in Walk-Up Math tend to be:

    • Inquisitive learners
    • Analytical thinkers
    • Creative problem-solvers
    • Highly motivated

Walk-Up Math is designed for students who are achieving in the area of mathematics. We are pleased to offer Walk-Up Math for students in grades 3-8.  Students will progress quickly through and “skip” grade level content, learn above grade level standards, and apply these standards through hands-on, project-based formats.

A student and parent commitment form specifying the participation criteria of this program has been developed with the goal of establishing a learning environment that leads to success in this advanced program.  Students and parents sign the commitment form annually to ensure thoughtful communication.  Areas addressed within the commitment form are listed below.

    Required Student Expectations:

    • Actively participate in class
    • Finish homework on time
    • Show respectful and positive behaviors with classmates and teacher
    • Attend class regularly
    • Participate in higher level thinking and application in the area of mathematics
    • Maintain overall proficiency and performance in class

These commitments will be reviewed along with grades and classroom behavior to determine if continued placement in the Walk-Up To Math class is appropriate at the end of each quarter.

    ASPIRE

In schools where in-person instruction is not available or convenient, students may participate in an online learning course.  ASPIRE – Deer Valley’s Online Learning Program provides Walk-Up To Math instruction for students who qualify.  This may include middle level and high school courses to elementary and middle school students. Participating students must complete cognitive abilities testing in order to be placed in this program.
