Ms. Theresa Smith's Biography

 Theresa Smith is an English Language Arts teacher at Boulder Creek High School in Anthem. In 2022-23, she is teaching four sections of senior English Language Arts, and one section of freshmen ELA . Also, she is an assistant baseball coach at BCHS, Level 2 certified by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Also, she has coaching experience as an assistant coach with Canyon Thunder, a club team affiliated with Grand Canyon University.

In a 14-year teaching career, she has taught ELA in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, along with AP Language and Composition, Dual Enrollment English, argumentation and rhetoric, public speaking, journalism and drama.

 Ms. Smith wrote her master’s degree thesis on oral fluency. In particular, she enjoys teaching speech and encouraging students to develop speaking skills. For four years, she trained students for Poetry Out Loud and organized POL competitions. Also, she started daily video newscasts at two high schools. Her first career as a writer prepared her to teach writing and to provide students with detailed feedback.

A former multi-platform journalist, Smith covered sports full-time at The Denver Post, The Orange County Register, The News Tribune (Wash.) and The Los Angeles Times, where she won two Top of the Times awards for investigative journalism. In 2021, she was inducted into the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.

She has covered high school sports, professional and college baseball, major college football and basketball, NFL sidebars and features, and was the beat writer of the Seattle Supersonics and the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA.

In broadcasting, she was the radio color analyst for University of Denver women’s basketball from 2002-07.  Before moving to Arizona, she served as public address announcer for football and basketball at two Colorado high schools.  In 2019 and 2020, she was the Public Address announcer for a few Jags football games.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in education from Western Colorado University.

Along with spending time with her family, she enjoys reading, writing, hiking, coaching baseball, and watching sports, particularly baseball.
