Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Acevedo

My name is Mr. Acevedo but you can call me Mr.A! I am from Los Angeles, California and I moved out to Arizona to go to school at Arizona State University to study music composition and engineering. I graduated with a degree in Arts, Media, and Engineering (Digital Culture) in 2017. After working a year at the Musical Instrument Museum here in Phoenix. I decided to go back to school to pursue music education and in the summer of 2020 I completed my masters in Music Education from ASU.

My whole life has been centered around music. Growing up, I would go visit my uncle on Saturdays and we would attend football games at the University of Southern California. We would wait with anticipation for the Trojan Marching Band to take the field. Living in LA, I was close to the Tournament of Roses Parade where the top bands in the nation would come and perform on New Year's day. I saw many great band musicians perform before I started playing trumpet in 2005. In 2009, I joined the Etiwanda High School Marching Eagle Regiment and fell in love with the activity known as marching band! Our program was considered one of the top music programs in the state and our marching band was top 5 in the St. George, Utah Band of America Western Regional. I marched all 4 years of high school playing trumpet and trombone, 2 years of indoor percussion playing cymbals, 5 years of Sun Devil Marching Band on Euphonium and 4 years participating with the Glassmen (1 Year) & Blue Knights (3 Years) Drum & Bugle Corps on Baritone. During my time marching around the country, I had the privilege of participating in Super Bowl 49's Pre-Show & halftime show with Katy Perry, Marching in the Tournament of Roses Parade, performing with OAR at the Phoenix Golf Open, and playing our National Anthem with Journey.

Although this is my third year teaching, my first at Desert Sky. I have been teaching musicians in Arizona since 2014,  serving as a private lesson teacher or as a marching band instructor specializing in brass, visual, and cymbals. I currently have the privilege of working with Boulder Creek High School's Marching Band as the Assistant Marching Band Director and drill writer. I Also work with the Deer Valley Marching Band as a Visual Instructor and Marching Band Program Consultant. I had the honor in the March of 2022 to serve as the clinician and Conductor for the Deer Valley Unified School District Concert Honor Band. Desert Sky's Music Programs will see an uptick in performance opportunities and community events this year.

Outside of the classroom, I am an avid gamer. I play a variety of table top and card games. I have been playing and collecting Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon Cards for over 20 years! I recently represented the state of Arizona in the Digimon TCG national championship, where I placed in the top 25% of the country's players. In 2019, I received my invite to represent the United States in the X-Wing Miniatures game World Championship. I recently dove into the world of Dungeon & Dragons and serve as a player and Dungeon Master.

Music, Band, and Choir are much more than a class. They teach lessons about problem solving, persevering through challenges and building a community to achieve a common goal. My goal as an educator is to prepare these students for high school and to be life-long music learners by giving them an experience that only the best music programs offer!
