Course Objectives from the Arizona State Standards:

  • Eighth Grade History Strands emphasize the historical foundations and democratic principles that framed our Constitution and led to our form of democracy. The history of World War II to the contemporary world is also studied.

This year we are continuing the implementation of the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards. These standards emphasize literacy and mathematics skills in all curricular areas. Classroom Expectations

  • For the first quarter (August 3 - October 9) all course content and lessons will be provided virtually through Canvas. We will be posting recorded videos, lessons, interactive links and activities, as well as conducting live Zoom classes throughout the school day. Schedules will be posted on Canvas once it has been approved. To hopefully clear up any confusion, ALL students will receive virtual instruction during the first quarter; you do not need to enroll your child in the DV Online Academy to participate in instruction with your PH teachers.

For attendance purposes, students are expected to do at least one of the following on a daily basis:
    • Log in to canvas for daily updates/assignments
    • Participate in Zoom lessons
    • Complete assigned lessons
    • Interact with each teacher in some way (Zoom, email, submit assignment, etc.)
For grading purposes, students will need to access course material through each teacher's Canvas and follow instructions/due dates for assignments. Parents and students can always message us with any questions regarding assignments. Please note: students enrolled in the DV Online Academy are also encouraged to participate in "live" lessons, but may have alternate due dates according to the online program.

Course Content

  • The 8th grade Social Studies program focuses on Citizenship And Civic Engagement In Today’s Society. The content focus will be viewed through civic and economic lenses. Citizenship and civic engagement will be taught through inquiry. Eighth grade students will make connections between historical and current/recent issues as a base for implementing change in society. Students will recognize and practice their roles and responsibilities as both American and global citizens. United States History will focus on the major events that have their roots in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and subsequent amendments.

Students will be receiving a balance of synchronous and asynchronous virtual instruction through canvas with a variety of resources within to guide our learning (textbook, primary sources, resource books, videos, notes), exploration (individual/group research), and cooperative learning (Kagan structures).  The information will be assessed by quizzes, tests, projects, and presentations.
