• Hello, Parents and Students...

I am Amy Mimms (Ms. Mimms) and I am the Read 180 Reading Specialist here at Deer Valley Middle School. I am really excited this year, in my 23rd year of teaching, to help all the struggling readers learn strategies to help reading and writing of grade level materials, work through the research-based Read 180 program to improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, and to help the students be the best version of themselves that they can be this year!

My goal is always to help students improve all the reading and writing skills to make them better than where they began. They can be as successful as they want in this class with effort and perseverance, remembering to use their growth mindset to learn from their mistakes. This is a safe place to take risks, learn from failures, and improve all reading and writing skills necessary to help them in all of their classes and in life.

I look forward to an incredible year of growth in Read 180 and life here in Arizona!

    Ms. Mimms

Years teaching: 23 (mostly in middle and high school English/Reading in Texas)

My family: Emily is my daughter and 25 years old and my fiancé, Richard - my parents and other family members still live in Texas.

My home state: Texas for most of my entire life

Pets: I have a cat, Lil Bit, that resides with Emily in Texas; hopefully, very soon, Richard and I will be getting an English Bulldog puppy!

My favorite subjects in school were: Reading and History

The best books I have read: The Bible, Lightning by Dean Koontz, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, the Blackbird Sisters mystery series by Nancy Martin, and any nonfiction stories about animals and nature tend to peak my interest!

My hobbies: Reading (duh!), hiking (especially here in AZ), watching baseball/basketball/football/golf, spending time with my family and friends, traveling, and napping on the weekends/summer!

My favorite foods/restaurants: Mexican food (esp. Jalapeño Inferno in Scottsdale), Chick-fil-A, Texas Roadhouse (of course), Del Taco, Dutch Bros, and Bobby Q's BBQ.
