Welcome! My name is Colleen Woods and I am a Special Education teacher at Deer Valley Middle School. This is my second year on campus teaching 7th grade English Language Arts with Ms. Simmons and Ms. Allen. I am also Team Teaching an 8^th grade English Language Arts class with Mr. Hadley. I had the honor of working alongside all three of these impactful teachers last year. I am grateful to be returning to a community of passionate educators and staff at Deer Valley Middle School!

I graduated from Arizona State University in 2004, becoming dual certified in both Elementary Education (K-8) and Special Education (K-12). This will be my second year teaching in Deer Valley. I previously taught in the Peoria Unified School district, both as a General Education and Special Education teacher. I have an enormous heart for teaching students with special needs and love building relationships with my students. In addition, my passion always has and will be teaching these goofy middle school age students! ;-) Although this school year is starting off different with the online platform due to COVID, I’m confident that students will experience an impactful education. I’m thrilled to dive into this school year!

Now for a little more about me…

I’m originally from the beautiful state of Michigan and usually get homesick around winter time when I start missing the snow. Outside of school, I’m usually spending time with my amazing children, both teenagers (yikes!). We play lots of board games, laugh endlessly, and are often out and about spending time in nature. Occasionally, our nerdy side will be revealed and we’ll find ourselves watching movies like The Lord of the Rings/Hobbit or Star Wars.

In closing, I cannot express enough how happy I am to be teaching 7^th and 8^th grade English Language Arts this school year. ELA is my passion, and helping kids discover a joy for writing and reading that they may not have known existed. I anticipate a wonderful year ahead. We’re in this together! :-)
