Welcome

Welcome to Fifth Grade

  • Fifth grade is a safe, caring, welcoming community of mutual respect that engages in competent, quality instruction to encourage students to reach their highest level of potential as life-long learners in the twenty-first century. Fifth grade is both a challenging and exciting year for students. Organization, study techniques, and setting goals are all skills that students work on continually throughout the year.

Students are responsible for turning in homework on time, and developing time management skills. These skills are necessary for their success in middle school and are practiced daily in fifth grade. Technology is integrated throughout all curriculum areas.

In math, we will focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. We will also learn more about geometry and the basics of algebra.

In reading we will focus on vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Using the writing process, students will compose pieces of writing that will cover the following genres: Personal Narrative, Persuasive, Poetry, Research Report, Imaginative Narrative, Compare and Contrast, Cause and Effect, and Argumentative.

In science, students will be engaged in the use of simple machines, using mixtures and solutions, and probing the Sun, Moon and Stars.

In social studies, students will travel through the Revolutionary War, our government, Westward Expansion, and the Industrial Revolution.

Working together, we will make this year your child's best year yet.
